CMDB Accuracy & Enrichment

Make Your CMDB More Useful for Infrastructure Decisions.

Asset discovery can tell you what exists without answering who is accountable, which service depends on an asset or whether its recorded relationships are still accurate.

Enrich workflows

Discovery and decision-ready context are different

A discovery system observes configuration items and technical attributes. Resolution workflows also need operational ownership, service relationships, business impact and the confidence that those attributes are current.

Fill and validate context gaps

Precize correlates information across infrastructure, identities, CMDB, tickets and operational records to derive missing or conflicting context. Candidate values can be reviewed or attested before being used for sensitive decisions.

Enrich existing workflows

Verified ownership and relationships can improve assignment, change review, incident response and vulnerability workflows. Precize complements the CMDB rather than replacing it; synchronization should respect the established data model and authoritative sources.

Example: asset exists, accountability does not

A cloud VM is discovered and appears in the CMDB, but its ownership field is empty. Operational signals point to a service team, while deployment history points to a platform team. Precize surfaces both relationships and enables validation before enrichment. This is an illustrative example.

Why is CMDB discovery not enough for remediation?

Discovery shows configuration items and attributes but may not reliably establish decision ownership, service criticality, dependencies or current approval authority. These additional facts are needed before teams can safely resolve an issue or change an asset.

How can an organization improve CMDB ownership accuracy?

Define accountability roles, identify missing or inconsistent records, correlate evidence from cloud, IAM, deployment, ticketing and operational sources, validate uncertain assignments, and continually refresh the information as infrastructure changes.

Does Precize replace ServiceNow Discovery or Service Graph?

No. Precize should be described as complementary: it focuses on deriving, validating and operationalizing missing infrastructure context. Existing ServiceNow discovery, service mapping and workflow products may remain the systems used for discovery, records and process execution.

What should be written back to the CMDB?

Only values with a defined data owner, appropriate confidence or validation, a known target field and a documented synchronization policy. Avoid overwriting authoritative source data solely on the basis of a probabilistic inference.

How do you handle conflicting CMDB and cloud data?

Preserve source evidence and timestamps, apply explicit precedence rules where available, identify the discrepancy and request review when the conflict cannot be resolved safely. Confidence and provenance should travel with inferred values when supported.
